The Footprint of a Rose: The Consumer’s Turn
Flowers make people happy. They bring colour, atmosphere and emotion - at home, at work, for a celebration or a farewell. But alongside that emotional value, consumers are becoming increasingly critical.
In our webshop, you can buy sustainably produced flowers and plants. Did you know that FleuraMetz, as part of the FM Group, has signed an agreement to strive for a 90% sustainable trade in the floriculture industry? Read more about this on the website of FM Group. We are also collaborating in relevant researches on packing material and more. Read everything about this subject on Circles.fm
Certification in the webshop
If the greenhouse or farm where the product is cultivated, possesses one of the 14 specialised certificates from the FSI basket, or is certified with MPS-A of FlorEcuador, you will see a sustainability icon. Filter on the certificates that are important for customers. Why a specific certificate is included in the FSI basket can be read on their website. Find out how to buy sustainable flowers and plants in the webshop here (FAQ).
Fairtrade flowers
FM Group is also Fairtrade certified as a wholesale company, which is a different certificate than mentioned above. It means that we are licensed to purchase and sell Fairtrade flowers. Our salespersons can help you source these products. This selection of flowers are often a bit dearer as Fairtrade certified growers must look after the right working environment for their employees including a fair salary. This certificate however, does not concern the growing method of a product. Therefore, Fairtrade is not listed under the same category as MPS-A and FlorEcuador.

At Gerbera United, the journey has already begun. The fight against pests is no longer waged with chemicals, but with life. Tiny predatory mites, bugs, and beetles keep the crop in balance. Not because it has to be that way, but because it can be - and because it’s better. For the environment, for the people working with it, and for the future.

At the Marginpar farms in Kenya and Ethiopia, they have built innovative systems to sustainably manage water: constructed wetlands. These engineered systems allow us to treat waste water from our facilities and reuse it to irrigate our flower fields. Not only does this process help us conserve water, but it also protects local ecosystems and reduces our environmental impact. In this article they explain how it works.

We all say it: we want flowers and plants we can feel good about. Grown without chemicals, with respect for people, animals, and the planet. But the moment a flower isn’t completely “perfect” – when there’s a bug visible or a spot on a leaf – we turn up our noses. We want the results of sustainab...
