For everyone looking for an alternative to flowers on Valentine’s Day: Hoya Kerrii. No plant says “I love you” more clearly during the most romantic time of the year. It is a low-maintenance Valentine’s plant with strong symbolism. In this blog, you’ll read how and why to use this plant in your floral designs.
The Hoya Kerrii is also known as the sweetheart plant, thanks to its distinctive heart-shaped leaves. The plant originates from tropical Southeast Asia and has thick, fleshy leaves that store water: an adaptation to the changing humidity in its natural habitat.
The Hoya Kerrii is often called the Valentine’s Hoya, as it is especially popular as a gift for Valentine’s Day.
There are several reasons for this:
Low maintenance: Hoya Kerrii requires very little water. Its leaves store moisture, making the plant easy to care for.
Heart-shaped leaves: The unique heart shape symbolizes love without words and forms the basis of the plant’s romantic meaning.
Sustainable love: Plants last longer than flowers. Just like love sometimes, this plant grows slowly but creates lasting memories.
This symbolism perfectly aligns with the message of floral designer Hanneke Frankema during her final show GROWTH!. For this show, she created a unique floral design made almost entirely of Hoya Kerrii plants.
Hanneke is known for her sustainable working method and reuse of materials from previous designs. She attached a large number of loose, heart-shaped leaves one by one to a reused aluminium frame, resulting in a green, umbrella-shaped bouquet with a striking visual effect.
You can find this unique design in the Wall of Fame, where floral creations by various floral designers are showcased.

This Valentine’s Day, choose plants instead of flowers. Combine different structures and shapes: from soft and rounded to bold and pointed.
Dare to step outside your comfort zone and give your Valentine’s assortment a surprising twist with plants like the Hoya Kerrii.
