Through Fairtrade, flower farm workers benefit from better wages, unions and safer working conditions. Under our ‘Flower Standard’, employers must pay at least Fairtrade’s minimum wage. And right now, we’re working towards living wages for all Fairtrade flower workers.
Sustainability
Research* has found that cut roses imported into the EU from Fairtrade certified Kenyan growers generated the lowest environmental impact compared to those grown in the Netherlands. And that includes the impact of flying. Why? The climate in Africa is ripe for growing flowers and often the cost of recreating that environment in Europe can come with a heavy carbon footprint.
Fairtrade flower farms also work to protect the environment, for example reducing water usage, planting trees and testing natural ways of tackling pests.
