Nicolaus Peters, world champion floral arrangement 2023, takes us into his colourful world during Buehentalk at the IPM. Nicolaus not only talks about his victory at the world championships, but also about his inspiration, the road to it and, of course, his Masterpieces at the IPM.
Despite his original desire to become a florist, Nicolaus' ambitions were not initially supported by his parents. They advised him to take a different path because of the challenges in the floral profession. Meanwhile, he studied horticulture, but his passion for flower arranging did not let him go. Eventually, he threw in the towel, choosing the path of sole proprietorship and studio, becoming the creative mind behind the floral displays that would eventually crown him world champion. His journey reflects the power of perseverance and following your true calling, even if that means going against the grain.
Nicolaus' distinctive style stems from his background in Ikebana and his fondness for impermanent materials. For this Masterpiece, he was inspired by the linework associated with Ikebana, combined with woodwork.
"It's all about lines and using few materials. I cut off round wood, turned it 90 degrees and glued it back together. I secured the thicker rods with dowels, otherwise they wouldn't hold. I like working with tubes and using fewer materials."
For the other Masterpiece he made for the IPM, you can see his innovative use of corrugated cardboard, inspired by everyday DIY materials. Here Nicolaus demonstrates his ability to find beauty in common materials. It shows his desire to step outside the traditional boundaries of flower arranging, integrating materials from different worlds into the arrangements.
