Leading the season
To be the first to have tulips of the season, the bulbs are put in a cold storage to mimic the winter season. As a result, Borst has tulips available as early as January!
Once ripe enough, a special X-ray machine sorts out all the tulips by stem length. The machine then cuts off the tulips and makes bunches of 10 tulips. These can then be rolled in immediately. The machine takes 8000 to 9000 photos per minute!
Bulb recycling
In the greenhouse, Borst uses hot-air and tube heating to save gas. In summer, the greenhouses are empty, but when the sun is full on, that heat is stored and used to blow the bulbs dry.
Borst is also no stranger to reusing raw materials. Old bulbs that are still usable are prepared to be planted in autumn. In this way, new bulbs are created from residual products in just two years!
